I also used to be an afficionado of SGI hardware. I grew up fascinated by movie effects and computers and always wanted to have an SGI. When they became cheap on the second-hand market, I jumped for joy. The initial satisfaction of owning hardware that once cost tens of thousands of dollars wore off when I realized these things were in the tens to hundreds of dollars range for a reason (speed compared to modern computers mainly). I would still be a fan, but the fast hardware is just too expensive to play with. At one point or another I've owned: IRIS Indigo, several Indigo 2's (teal to purple High Impact R10k), Octane, Origin 200, Origin 2000. My current 'collection' is one solid impact indigo 2, origin 200 and one origin 2000. I'm looking to sell the 2000 and indigo 2.
For the curious, under my desk at home I have a 2.4 Ghz Athlon 64 box, and a 450mhz Mac G4- my favorite has become the mac with the advent of OSX (though I'd been a PC fan my whole life).
